Indian Air Force Ranks 6th in Global Air Powers 2026, Behind US and European Powers

The Indian Air Force has been ranked sixth in the Global Air Powers Ranking 2026, positioning it as the highest-ranked air arm in Asia and reinforcing India’s air superiority across the Indian Ocean region.

The ranking, which evaluates air forces globally, places the IAF ahead of several major powers but behind the United States Air Force, which tops the list, alongside leading European and allied air forces. The assessment reflects the IAF’s operational capacity, fleet modernisation, and strategic reach.

The IAF’s position in the global hierarchy underscores the impact of its ongoing fleet expansion and modernisation programme. The service operates a diverse fleet spanning Russian, French, Israeli, and indigenous platforms. The backbone of the fighter fleet remains the HAL Tejas Light Combat Aircraft, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, which has progressively replaced ageing MiG-21 Bisons since its operational induction in 2016.

Beyond the Tejas, the IAF operates 272 Sukhoi Su-30MKI multirole fighters acquired from Russia, which form the core of the medium combat aircraft fleet. The service also fields Mirage 2000 jets from France, alongside newly acquired Rafale fighters delivered since 2020. These platforms provide the IAF with advanced air-to-air combat capability, precision strike range, and network-centric warfare integration.

Strategic airlift capacity has been bolstered by the induction of C-17 Globemaster heavy-lift transports and A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft, which enable extended operational reach and sustained air operations across the Indo-Pacific. The IAF’s air defence architecture includes systems such as the S-400 Triumf long-range air defence system inducted from Russia in 2023, providing layered protection against aerial threats at ranges exceeding 400 kilometres.

India’s defence procurement roadmap includes acquisition of 114 Medium Combat Aircraft through a competitive international tender, alongside indigenous development of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft programme led by DRDO. These initiatives form part of India’s broader aim to achieve self-reliance in aerospace manufacturing under the Make in India initiative.

The sixth-place ranking reflects the IAF’s transition from a primarily defensive air force into one capable of extended power projection. Operational readiness remains high, supported by regular bilateral exercises with allied air forces including those of France, Japan, the United States, and Australia, which strengthen interoperability and collective security architecture in the Indo-Pacific region.
