India, U.S. Defence Chiefs to Meet in Malaysia to Ease Trade and Strategic Tensions
The high-level meeting between Rajnath Singh and Pete Hegseth in Kuala Lumpur aims to restore momentum in defence ties amid ongoing tariff disputes.

In a significant diplomatic development, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to meet U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on October 31, 2025, to address growing friction in trade and defence relations between the two countries.
The talks, scheduled on the sidelines of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM), are expected to focus on restoring trust and cooperation following recent trade disagreements triggered by U.S. tariff hikes on Indian exports. The meeting also comes amid concerns that trade tensions could spill over into strategic and defence partnerships that have long been central to the Indo-Pacific security framework.
According to officials familiar with the matter, both sides are expected to discuss key defence initiatives, including India’s procurement of P-8I maritime patrol aircraft and ongoing projects under the India–U.S. Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI). The discussions will likely touch upon strengthening joint military exercises, technology transfers, and enhancing interoperability between the armed forces.
Diplomatic observers believe the meeting reflects a mutual understanding that economic friction should not overshadow shared strategic goals. With rising security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region, both nations view sustained cooperation as essential to maintaining balance and stability, particularly amid growing Chinese assertiveness.
This engagement in Malaysia marks the first high-level defence dialogue between India and the U.S. since Washington announced additional tariffs earlier this year. Analysts suggest it could lay the groundwork for a larger bilateral summit aimed at reaffirming defence commitments and reviving trade confidence.
A successful outcome from the Kuala Lumpur talks may signal a broader reset in ties, reinforcing that while trade disputes may fluctuate, strategic cooperation between New Delhi and Washington remains a cornerstone of regional security.
