Congress MP Shashi Tharoor held discussions with European Union Ambassador to India Hervé Delphin on the future of India-EU relations and the scope for closer cooperation involving Kerala.
The talks covered developments in Europe and the wider strategic relationship between India and the European Union. Both sides also discussed areas where stronger engagement could create new opportunities for India, including Kerala’s links with European countries.
Maritime cooperation featured prominently in the discussions. Kerala has been invited to participate in the Grand Pavois boat show in La Rochelle, France, providing an opportunity to showcase the state’s maritime interests and build connections with the European maritime community. The conversation also touched on ways to encourage greater interest in sailing among Indians.
Economic cooperation was another important aspect of the engagement. Tharoor and Delphin discussed the opportunities associated with the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, which is expected to support stronger commercial ties and improve access between the two major markets.
The discussions also addressed the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, an important issue for Indian exporters operating in carbon-intensive sectors. The mechanism has emerged as a significant part of India-EU economic discussions as both sides work to align trade with climate-related objectives.
Beyond trade and environmental issues, the EU side identified several sectors with potential for deeper cooperation, including semiconductors, clean technology, pharmaceuticals, agri-food and resilient supply chains. These areas reflect the increasingly broad nature of the India-EU partnership.
India and the European Union have steadily expanded their engagement beyond traditional diplomatic and commercial ties. Strategic security, emerging technologies, supply-chain resilience and maritime cooperation are becoming increasingly important components of the relationship.
The meeting between Tharoor and Delphin therefore comes at a significant time for India-EU engagement. It also highlights the potential for states such as Kerala to develop stronger links with European partners in specialised sectors, particularly maritime activities and related industries.
