A Russian missile strike has damaged the ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih steel facility in central Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuries to 14 workers. The attack targeted critical industrial infrastructure and temporarily disrupted production activities at the plant.
The strike occurred in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and one of the country’s most important industrial centres. Company officials confirmed that sections of the facility were hit during the attack, causing significant damage to operational infrastructure.
Among the affected areas were power-generation systems and blast-furnace facilities that play a vital role in steel production. The damage forced the company to partially suspend operations while technical teams began assessing the extent of the destruction and planning recovery efforts.
The incident comes amid a renewed surge in long-range attacks exchanged between Russia and Ukraine. In recent weeks, both sides have increased the use of missiles and drones to target strategic locations far from active battlefield zones, expanding the impact of the conflict on industrial and economic assets.
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is Ukraine’s largest steel producer and a key contributor to the country’s manufacturing sector. The facility is owned by global steel giant ArcelorMittal, whose executive chairman is Indian-origin businessman Lakshmi Mittal. Because of its importance to Ukraine’s industrial output, any disruption at the plant carries wider economic implications.
The attack also highlights the growing challenges facing Ukraine’s heavy industries. Repeated strikes on energy networks, factories and transportation infrastructure have complicated efforts to maintain production levels and support economic activity during the ongoing war.
Earlier this month, another major Ukrainian steel facility in Zaporizhzhia was reportedly struck during a separate Russian attack, underlining the increasing vulnerability of industrial sites across the country. Such incidents have raised concerns about the long-term impact of the conflict on Ukraine’s manufacturing capacity.
While emergency crews and plant personnel continue recovery work, company officials are focused on restoring damaged systems and ensuring the safety of employees. The timeline for a full return to normal operations remains uncertain and will depend on the condition of the affected infrastructure.
The latest strike demonstrates how industrial facilities have become an important element of the broader Russia-Ukraine conflict.
