Russia has reportedly proposed a joint production programme with India for the T-90MS main battle tank, a next-generation version of the T-90 platform that already serves as a key component of the Indian Army’s armoured forces. The proposal reflects the long-standing defence partnership between the two countries and could further strengthen India’s indigenous military manufacturing capabilities.
The T-90MS is an upgraded variant designed with improved battlefield survivability, greater firepower, and enhanced mobility. It features reinforced armour, an advanced fire-control system with modern thermal imaging, and a more powerful engine, enabling better performance in demanding combat conditions. These upgrades are intended to improve operational efficiency across diverse terrains while reducing maintenance requirements.
India has relied on the T-90 platform for more than two decades, operating a fleet of over a thousand tanks deployed across strategically important sectors, including high-altitude regions and desert frontiers. Many of these tanks have already been manufactured domestically under licence at the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi, Tamil Nadu, supporting the country’s defence production ecosystem and reducing dependence on direct imports.
If approved, the proposed joint manufacturing arrangement would build on this existing industrial framework by introducing the more advanced T-90MS configuration into local production. Such a move could help expand India’s armoured capabilities while supporting technology transfer, domestic manufacturing, and skilled employment within the defence sector.
The proposal also aligns with India’s broader objective of strengthening self-reliance in defence production through international partnerships that include local manufacturing and industrial collaboration. Russia has remained one of India’s principal defence partners, with cooperation extending across combat aircraft, missile systems, armoured vehicles, helicopters, and naval platforms.
As the Indian Army continues to modernise its armoured formations to meet future operational requirements, the potential induction and local production of the T-90MS could further enhance the country’s combat readiness while reinforcing the long-standing strategic defence relationship between New Delhi and Moscow.
