Amidst the busy Monday morning in Kyiv, the deafening bangs of explosions filled the air as Ukraine’s military issued a warning about an impending Russian strike involving missiles and drones. Reports indicated that Russia had deployed 11 TU-95 bombers and fired several missiles, while nearby, Reuters journalists witnessed air defenses responding to incoming threats outside of the capital city.

Reports from local authorities indicate that there were explosions in the northwestern city of Lutsk, resulting in damage to an apartment building. They are currently working to confirm any potential injuries or fatalities.

According to the Operational Command of the Polish armed forces, on X, aircraft from both Poland and its allies were mobilized in response to Russia’s attack. The strike also aimed at areas in western Ukraine and close to the Polish border.

Ukrainians have long anticipated a significant Russian missile assault. Just last week, the US embassy cautioned of a heightened likelihood of attack coinciding with Ukrainian Independence Day, celebrated on Saturday.

In response to Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Ukraine has increased its use of long-range drone attacks targeting Russia.

Ukraine’s military said that there were two separate instances of drone attacks from Russia earlier today. So far, it seems that there have been no reports of damage or casualties.

As per Serhiy Popko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration on the Telegram messaging app, approximately 10 drones were destroyed around Kyiv in the region at approximately 0230 GMT during their approach towards the city.
