The Research Centre Imarat (RCI), a key laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the modification and refurbishment of the 8×8 PRAHAR launcher to support operational requirements associated with India’s PRALAY tactical ballistic missile system.
The initiative focuses on upgrading the existing launcher platform by integrating advanced communication and networking capabilities, enabling improved coordination and data exchange during missile operations. The RFP marks another step towards strengthening India’s indigenous missile ecosystem and enhancing battlefield connectivity.
According to details available in the RFP, the refurbishment programme will involve the integration of multiple communication subsystems, including Satellite Communication (SATCOM), Line-of-Sight (LoS) communication and data networking systems. These upgrades are aimed at establishing secure communication links between the launcher unit and associated command and control elements.
The upgraded 8×8 PRAHAR launcher will undergo validation and verification trials to assess communication link performance and ensure reliable operational connectivity in different mission scenarios. The integration of these systems is expected to improve command responsiveness and operational flexibility for tactical missile deployments.
The PRAHAR launcher platform was originally developed as part of India’s indigenous short-range missile programme, while the PRALAY missile represents a more advanced tactical ballistic missile capability designed for precision strikes against critical enemy targets.
The refurbishment effort reflects India’s broader focus on modernising existing defence platforms rather than relying solely on new acquisitions. By upgrading launch infrastructure with advanced communication networks, the Indian defence establishment aims to create a more integrated and digitally connected missile force.
The latest development also highlights the increasing importance of network-centric warfare capabilities, where real-time communication, situational awareness and rapid decision-making play a crucial role in modern military operations.
