Monday, Poland said it had already sent some of the MiG-29 fighter jets it had promised to Ukraine. This came after another NATO member, Slovakia, said it had sent the first batch of its own.
“Already, a few MiG-29s have been sent. They do help Ukraine protect our collective security “Marcin Przydacz, an aide to the Polish president, told the local radio station RMF FM about this.
Last month, Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said that his country would send the first four fighter jets. This made Poland the first NATO member to make this promise.
He said at the time that Poland had about a dozen MiG planes from the former German Democratic Republic that they were “on the verge” of sending to Ukraine.
Later, Slovakia said it would also send MiG-29s to Ukraine. It said there would be 10 fighter jets that could fly and three more that would be used for spare parts.
Late last month, Slovakia said that it had already given the first four of the 11 jets it had promised to give. The remaining nine jets will be given in the next few weeks, Slovakia said.
Ukraine has asked its Western allies many times to send warplanes, mostly modern F-16s made in the US.
