Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov in Bishkek on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, with the discussions centred on giving fresh momentum to relations between India and Kyrgyzstan.
The meeting highlighted the growing importance of the India-Kyrgyzstan partnership as New Delhi continues to strengthen its engagement with Central Asia. Both leaders reviewed the progress made in bilateral ties and expressed support for expanding cooperation in areas that can deliver greater economic and social benefits to both countries.
Economic engagement was among the key subjects discussed during the talks. India and Kyrgyzstan explored opportunities to increase trade and commercial interaction by making better use of the strengths and capabilities of both economies. Greater cooperation in investment and other emerging sectors could further broaden the foundation of the bilateral relationship.
The discussions also underlined the importance of people-to-people connections. Student exchanges, cultural interaction and closer contacts between the two societies were highlighted as important elements in building a stronger and more durable partnership.
Prime Minister Modi also appreciated Kyrgyzstan’s role in hosting the SCO Summit and acknowledged the country’s contribution to the organisation’s activities. He conveyed India’s support for Kyrgyzstan’s leadership of the SCO process and emphasised the value of continued cooperation through the regional grouping.
For India, closer relations with Kyrgyzstan form part of its broader effort to deepen strategic and economic ties across Central Asia. The region remains significant for connectivity, trade, security and wider diplomatic engagement, making sustained cooperation with countries such as Kyrgyzstan increasingly important.
The latest meeting between Modi and Zhaparov reflects the continuing effort by both sides to expand bilateral ties beyond traditional diplomatic engagement. With greater emphasis on commerce, education, culture and emerging areas of cooperation, India and Kyrgyzstan are seeking to build a broader and more productive strategic partnership.
