The tradition of handling such medals began in 1947, and they are awarded to the forces every 25 years. On August 15, 1997, India celebrated its golden jubilee — 50 years of independence — with special medals bestowed on the armed forces and CAPF personnel.

What to look for this year @ 75 years of Independence?

“The medal has already been approved for both the armed forces and the CAPF,” a source in the defence and security establishment said. So far, no details about the design have been revealed.

According to sources, the obverse of the medal was embossed with Red Fort in 1997. ’50th Anniversary of Independence 1947-1997′ was inscribed in English along the rim, and a map of India was inscribed in a circle on the back of the medal.

Who all had received the medal in 1997?

It was given to all members of the three services: the army, navy, and Indian air force, as well as the Territorial Army, other Reserve Forces, Railway Police Forces, paramilitary forces such as Home Guards, the Civil Defence Organization, and the Fire Services.

What about the 25th Independence Anniversary Medal?

The obverse of the medal was then embossed with the State Emblem and the inscription ’25th Independence Anniversary Medal’ in English. On the reverse, there was a replica of the Ashoka Chakra in the centre, with 1947 above and 1972 below inscribed on it.

Who received it?

This medal commemorating the 25th anniversary of independence was given to the Reserve Forces, Territorial Army, and Technical Staff of the Intelligence Bureau, as well as the Calcutta Special Police Force, Home Guards, Civil Defence Organization, Fire Service, Jail staff, and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

On August 15, 1947, all Indians in the armed forces, including Nepalese Gurkhas, were serving in the Indian Armed Forces. This medal was also given to all ruling Princes of States who had acceded to the Dominion of India. Members of such State Forces who served on August 15, 1947.

According to publicly available information, the British were awarded this medal alongside the Indians and Nepalese.

Details about the 1947 medal

The Imperial Crown and Ashoka Chakra were depicted on the medal’s obverse, which was surrounded by the inscriptions ‘GEORGEIUS VI: D:G: BRITT:OMN: REX: FID DEF’. The reverse of the medal depicted Ashoka’s three lions and was inscribed with ‘Indian Independence’ and ’15th August 1947′.
