India’s national space programme is preparing for an exceptionally active year as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) aims to carry out seven major launches during the 2026-27 financial year. The planned missions underline the country’s commitment to strengthening its space capabilities across communications, Earth observation, navigation, and future exploration programmes.
ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan confirmed that the agency’s next launch is expected within the coming weeks, marking the beginning of an intensive launch schedule. The organisation has already completed detailed mission planning and is coordinating launch preparations across its major space centres to maintain a steady operational pace throughout the year.
The upcoming missions are expected to involve a combination of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), and Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3). These rockets will carry satellites designed for civilian services, scientific research, national infrastructure, and commercial customers, reflecting the diverse role ISRO now plays in India’s growing space economy.
Beyond satellite deployment, ISRO is also focusing on long-term strategic programmes. Several technologies being tested through these launches will contribute to upcoming projects, including advanced communication systems, next-generation remote sensing satellites, and preparations for future human spaceflight missions. These efforts are expected to strengthen India’s self-reliance in critical space technologies.
The increased launch frequency is being supported by major infrastructure upgrades. ISRO is expanding its operational capabilities while accelerating work on the Kulasekarapattinam Spaceport in Tamil Nadu, which will complement the existing Satish Dhawan Space Centre and help accommodate higher launch volumes in the coming years.
India’s rapidly expanding private space industry is also expected to play a larger role during this phase. Following the government’s space sector reforms, private companies are contributing to satellite manufacturing, launch support, propulsion technologies, and other critical services. This collaboration is helping build a more competitive and innovation-driven space ecosystem.
The ambitious seven-launch calendar reflects India’s broader vision of becoming a leading global space power. Along with supporting national development and commercial opportunities, the missions are expected to reinforce India’s technological leadership and lay the foundation for more advanced space exploration initiatives in the years ahead.
