INS Mahendragiri Delivered: Indian Navy Inducts Sixth Advanced Stealth Frigate Under Project 17A

Locally built warship highlights India’s growing shipbuilding strength and next-gen naval warfare capabilities

India has taken another major step in strengthening its naval fleet with the delivery of INS Mahendragiri, the sixth stealth frigate under the ambitious Project 17A programme. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, the warship reflects the country’s steady progress in indigenous defence manufacturing.

Project 17A is a follow-on initiative to the earlier Shivalik-class frigates, but with significantly upgraded technology, improved stealth features, and enhanced combat capabilities. The ships in this class are designed to operate effectively across a wide spectrum of maritime missions, ranging from surface combat to anti-submarine and air defence operations.

INS Mahendragiri incorporates advanced design elements developed by the Indian Navy’s in-house warship designers, ensuring better survivability, reduced radar signature, and improved operational efficiency. The vessel is equipped with modern weapons, integrated sensors, and sophisticated combat management systems, enabling it to respond to evolving threats in complex maritime environments.

A key highlight of this warship is its high level of indigenous content, which stands at approximately 75 percent. The construction process involved extensive participation from Indian industries, including a large number of MSMEs, reinforcing the government’s focus on self-reliance in defence production.

The delivery of Mahendragiri also reflects improvements in shipbuilding practices, such as modular construction techniques that help reduce build time while maintaining quality standards. This approach is becoming central to India’s future naval projects.

With regional maritime challenges continuing to evolve, the induction of advanced platforms like INS Mahendragiri is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s operational readiness. The Nilgiri-class frigates will form a crucial component of India’s blue-water capabilities, ensuring security across vital sea routes and strategic waters.

The addition of this warship underscores India’s long-term commitment to modernising its armed forces while boosting domestic industrial capabilities under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision.
