India has firmly secured its position among the world’s top five military spenders, reflecting its growing strategic priorities and defence modernization efforts. According to the latest global defence expenditure data, India’s military spending has reached approximately $92 billion in 2025, marking a significant increase compared to previous years.
This surge places India alongside major global powers such as the United States, China, Russia, and Germany, highlighting its expanding role in global security dynamics. The increase is part of a broader global trend, where rising geopolitical tensions and regional conflicts have pushed countries to invest heavily in their armed forces.
One of the most striking aspects of the report is the widening defence spending gap between India and Pakistan. India’s military expenditure is now nearly eight to nine times higher than Pakistan’s, underlining a significant imbalance in defence capabilities between the two neighbours.
While Pakistan has also increased its defence budget in recent years, its total spending remains comparatively limited, estimated at around $11-12 billion. In contrast, India’s consistent rise in defence allocation is driven by modernization programs, technological advancements, and the need to address evolving security challenges along its borders.
Experts suggest that India’s defence spending growth is closely linked to its long-term strategic goals, including strengthening indigenous defence production, enhancing military readiness, and maintaining a strong deterrence posture in the region. Additionally, the focus on domestic manufacturing under initiatives like “Make in India” has further boosted defence investments.
Globally, military expenditure has reached record levels, crossing nearly $2.8 trillion, indicating a sustained upward trend in defence budgets worldwide. This reflects increasing uncertainties in international relations and the shifting balance of power across regions.
India’s position as a top defence spender not only highlights its economic and military strength but also signals its intent to play a more prominent role in global security and regional stability.
