India Advances Project Kusha to Boost Indigenous Long-Range Air Defence Capability

India is steadily progressing development of Project Kusha, an indigenously designed long-range air defence system intended to strengthen the country’s layered air defence architecture across multiple operational theatres.

Project Kusha represents a critical component of India’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on foreign air defence platforms and build organic capability in the upper-tier air defence domain. The programme aligns with the Defence Ministry’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat objectives, positioning DRDO as the prime developer of the system.

The long-range air defence segment has historically been dominated by acquired platforms. India currently operates the S-400 Triumf system procured from Russia, complemented by the indigenous Akash family of surface-to-air missiles developed by DRDO. Project Kusha is designed to provide a credible indigenous alternative for engagement of aerial threats at extended ranges, including fixed-wing aircraft, cruise missiles, and airborne early warning platforms.

The system’s development encompasses multiple sub-systems including radar for target acquisition and tracking, command and control architecture, and a missile platform optimised for high-altitude intercepts. DRDO’s involvement ensures integration with India’s broader air defence network and compatibility with existing air defence operating procedures across the Indian Air Force and Army Air Defence.

Development programmes of this complexity typically span several years from design validation through prototype testing and eventual production-ready variants. The steady advancement noted indicates progression through developmental milestones, though the system remains in the engineering and testing phases before induction into operational service.

India’s investment in indigenous long-range air defence capability reflects operational requirements shaped by evolving aerial threats in the sub-continent and extended maritime zones. The system will complement existing platforms and provide commanders with enhanced flexibility in air defence deployment across varied geographical terrains and operational scenarios.

Project Kusha demonstrates DRDO’s technical maturity in complex multi-sensor, multi-platform integration required for modern air defence systems.
