India Achieves Major Defence Milestone as First Privately Manufactured C-295 Aircraft Nears Rollout

Tata-Airbus facility in Gujarat prepares to unveil India’s first privately built military transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force.

India’s defence manufacturing sector is set to witness a historic moment as the country’s first privately produced military aircraft, the C-295 transport aircraft, is ready for rollout from the Tata-Airbus production facility in Gujarat. The development marks a significant achievement in India’s push towards self-reliance in defence production and aerospace manufacturing.

The aircraft is being manufactured under a partnership between Tata Advanced Systems and Airbus for the Indian Air Force as part of a multi-billion-dollar defence programme aimed at modernising India’s tactical airlift capabilities.

The Vadodara-based production line has emerged as India’s first private-sector military aircraft manufacturing facility, highlighting the increasing role of private companies in the country’s defence ecosystem. The project is expected to strengthen indigenous aerospace capabilities while supporting the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.

Under the C-295 deal, the Indian Air Force will receive a total of 56 aircraft. While the initial aircraft are being supplied directly from Spain, the remaining aircraft are planned to be assembled and manufactured in India. The programme also includes extensive technology transfer and participation from Indian MSMEs involved in the aerospace supply chain.

The C-295 is a modern tactical transport aircraft capable of operating from short and unprepared airstrips. It can be used for troop movement, logistics support, humanitarian assistance, maritime patrol, disaster response, and medical evacuation missions. The aircraft will eventually replace the ageing Avro fleet currently serving with the Indian Air Force.

Industry analysts believe the successful production of the aircraft in India could become a turning point for the country’s private aerospace industry. The project is expected to create employment opportunities, boost local manufacturing, and encourage future defence collaborations with global aviation firms.

The rollout of the aircraft also demonstrates India’s growing confidence in advanced military production capabilities. Experts say the programme could pave the way for India to become a regional hub for aircraft manufacturing and maintenance in the coming years.

As the first Indian-built C-295 prepares for its official rollout, the achievement reflects the country’s broader ambition to reduce dependence on foreign defence imports and establish a stronger domestic defence industrial base.
