IAF Seeks .50 Calibre Sniper Rifles to Enhance Garud Special Forces’ Long-Range Combat Capability

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has initiated the process of acquiring next-generation high-calibre sniper rifles for its elite Garud Special Forces by issuing a Request for Information (RFI) for specialized 12.7×99mm (.50 BMG) sniper weapon systems. The move is part of the Air Force’s ongoing modernization drive focused on enhancing the operational effectiveness of its special operations units.

According to the RFI, the proposed weapon system is expected to provide exceptional long-range precision engagement while also offering anti-materiel capabilities against lightly armoured vehicles, communication equipment, radar installations, and other high-value targets. The acquisition is intended to improve the Garud commandos’ ability to undertake complex missions in diverse operational environments.

The Garud Special Forces currently employ sniper systems with comparatively shorter engagement ranges. The induction of a .50 calibre platform would enable operators to engage threats well beyond one kilometre with greater accuracy, increasing both survivability and mission effectiveness during counter-terrorism, strategic security, and combat operations.

The RFI seeks industry responses for a complete sniper system package, including advanced optics, suppressors where applicable, bipods, day and night sighting systems, carrying accessories, maintenance support, and training solutions. The objective is to identify available technologies before moving to the next stage of the procurement process under India’s defence acquisition framework.

The proposed rifles are expected to deliver high accuracy, reliability, and durability under extreme weather and battlefield conditions. Such weapons are widely used by military special forces worldwide for both long-range precision strikes and disabling critical enemy assets without requiring heavier weapon systems.

The latest RFI also reflects the IAF’s broader effort to strengthen the capabilities of the Garud Special Forces through the induction of modern combat equipment. In recent months, the Air Force has also pursued procurement initiatives covering loitering munitions, high-mobility vehicles, machine guns, and other specialized systems to improve the force’s operational flexibility.

While the issuance of the RFI does not constitute a purchase order, it marks the initial stage of evaluating available technologies and industry participation. The responses received will help the IAF define technical requirements before proceeding with future procurement steps.
