Defence Ministry Secures Deal For Acquisition Of 6 Patrol Vessels To Strengthen Coast Guard

On Wednesday, the defense ministry signed a Rs 1,614 crore deal with Mazagon Dockyard Shipbuilders Ltd to buy six next-generation patrol boats for the Indian Coast Guard.
The buying of the platforms is meant to improve the Coast Guard’s ability to keep the seas safe, the defense ministry said. As per the ministry, on December 20, the Ministry of Defence signed a deal with Mazagon Dockyard Shipbuilders Ltd to buy six next-generation offshore patrol vessels for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). It said the deal was made under the “buy (Indian-IDDM)” category and cost Rs 1614.89 crore all together.

Out of the six ships that are being bought, four will replace the Coast Guard’s old offshore patrol boats and the other two will add to the fleet. “The goal of buying these major ICG platforms is to improve the ICG’s abilities and shows that the government is paying more attention to maritime security,” the ministry said in a statement.
“These modern, high-tech ships will play a key role in improving law enforcement, search and rescue, responding to maritime pollution, and other important tasks, such as providing humanitarian aid,” the statement said.
It said that these offshore patrol ships would have a lot of high-tech features and tools, like multipurpose drones, AI (artificial intelligence) capabilities, and a wirelessly controlled remote water rescue craft lifebuoy. This would give them more operational flexibility and an edge.
