General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, who is in charge of the army in Bangladesh, will go to India on Thursday for a three-day trip to improve military relations between the two countries.
The Ministry of Defense said in a statement, “During the visit, he will meet with India’s top military and civilian leaders to talk about ways to improve India-Bangladesh defense relations.”
Gen. Ahmed started his trip to India by visiting the National War Memorial in New Delhi to pay his respects to the heroes who died in war. He was given a guard of honor at the Raisina Hills South Block grounds.
“The Army Chiefs talked about improving and strengthening interoperability, training, working together against terrorism, and overall bilateral cooperation as part of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries,” the report said.
Later, General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed met with Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar, Vice Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal AP Singh, Defence Secretary, and Foreign Secretary.
The Department of Defense Production (DDP) and the Army Design Bureau also gave him information about how India makes its own defense weapons.
During the Liberation War of 1971, India and Bangladesh worked together and helped each other. On the defense side, there are high-level exchanges at the level of service chiefs, the first-ever annual defense dialogues led by the defense secretaries, tri-services staff talks, and staff talks that are special to each service.
