General Dhiraj Seth honours the brave soldiers of the 1999 Kargil War, calling their courage and sacrifice a lasting symbol of India’s resolve to defend its sovereignty.
The Indian Army commemorated the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas by paying heartfelt tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War. Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth described the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of the Kargil warriors as a defining chapter in India’s military history, saying their heroic actions safeguarded the nation’s sovereignty and continue to inspire generations of soldiers and citizens.
Speaking during the commemorative events at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, General Seth said Kargil Vijay Diwas is not merely a remembrance of a military victory but a solemn occasion to honour the unwavering commitment, determination and supreme sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces. He emphasised that the bravery displayed by the soldiers under some of the world’s most challenging high-altitude combat conditions remains an enduring example of professionalism, resilience and patriotism.
Recalling the achievements of Operation Vijay, the Army Chief noted that Indian troops overcame immense operational challenges to recapture strategic mountain positions occupied during the conflict. Their determination and battlefield excellence ultimately restored India’s territorial integrity and demonstrated the Indian Army’s capability to prevail under the most demanding circumstances.
General Seth also paid homage to the officers, junior commissioned officers and soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation. He stated that their legacy continues to guide the Indian Army’s values of courage, honour and selfless service while strengthening the country’s commitment to national security.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on 26 July to commemorate India’s victory in the Kargil War of 1999. Across the country, military establishments, veterans, government representatives and citizens marked the occasion with wreath-laying ceremonies and tributes, reaffirming the nation’s gratitude to the brave men and women who defended India’s borders.
More than two decades after the conflict, the legacy of the Kargil heroes remains deeply embedded in India’s military ethos. Their sacrifice serves as a constant reminder of the price of freedom and the unwavering dedication of the Indian Armed Forces in protecting the nation’s sovereignty.
