Indian Navy Launches Machilipatnam, Seventh Mahe-Class Anti-Submarine Warfare Craft

The Indian Navy has launched Machilipatnam, the seventh vessel of the Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) programme, marking another significant achievement in India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding efforts.

The vessel was launched at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and will enhance the Navy’s capability to detect, track, and counter underwater threats in coastal and shallow-water regions. The Mahe-class craft are specifically designed to undertake anti-submarine warfare missions, maritime surveillance, and protection of critical naval areas.

Machilipatnam is part of an eight-vessel programme developed to strengthen the Indian Navy’s underwater warfare capabilities. These vessels will provide improved situational awareness in littoral zones and support operations aimed at safeguarding India’s maritime interests.

Built under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the Mahe-class programme reflects India’s growing expertise in designing and manufacturing advanced naval platforms within the country. The involvement of Indian shipyards highlights the increasing role of domestic defence industries in supporting the Navy’s modernisation plans.

The anti-submarine warfare craft are equipped with advanced sensors and systems that enable them to operate effectively in shallow waters, where traditional larger warships may face operational challenges. Their capabilities will help the Navy monitor underwater activities, protect coastal infrastructure, and respond quickly to emerging maritime threats.

The launch of Machilipatnam further expands the Indian Navy’s fleet of indigenous platforms and demonstrates the country’s commitment to developing a self-reliant maritime defence ecosystem. As maritime security challenges continue to grow in the Indian Ocean Region, these vessels will play an important role in strengthening India’s coastal defence network.
