India’s Director General of Police, R. R. Swain, said here on Monday that the war against militancy in Jammu and Kashmir is not over yet and that security forces may be losing members but will not give up. The forces were trying to keep casualties as low as possible, he said.
“If the challenge is to move forward even though we have to lose, we will not back down from that challenge,” the top police officer in Jammu and Kashmir said.
After bowing down at Srinagar’s Chatipadshai Gurudwara for Gurpurab, he was talking to reporters.
“This war is certainly not over yet. People on both sides will have to admit that the war is pointless and will only lead to more deaths before it ends. Unfortunately, we will continue to lose in our fight until then. However, we have to move forward by accepting those losses. “This war is too important to give up on,” Swain said.
In answer to a question, he said that every time it snows, infiltration goes up in some places and down in others.
“It is a matter of strategy and cannot be discussed publicly,” he told us.
Last week, an operation in Rajouri killed five soldiers, two of whom were captains. In the same operation, two terrorists were killed, one of them a top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander who had been trained in Afghanistan.
