Vice Admiral Anil Jaggi has been appointed as the new Commandant of the National Defence Academy (NDA), taking over from Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh. The appointment was announced by the Ministry of Defence, marking a significant leadership change at India’s prestigious tri-service training institution based in Khadakwasla, Pune.
A veteran officer with over three decades of distinguished service in the Indian Navy, Vice Admiral Jaggi was commissioned on January 1, 1993. Over the years, he has served in several key operational, instructional, and command roles. His sea commands include the missile vessel INS Veer and the advanced stealth frigate INS Sahyadri, reflecting his deep operational experience and leadership at sea.
Before assuming his new role at the NDA, Vice Admiral Jaggi served as the Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra Naval Area and previously as the Flag Officer Commanding Gujarat, Daman and Diu Naval Area. In these appointments, he played a vital role in enhancing coastal security infrastructure, civil-military cooperation, and strategic maritime readiness along India’s western coast.
An alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College (Wellington) and the Naval War College (Goa), Vice Admiral Jaggi has also completed the United Nations Observer Course at the Swedish Armed Forces International Centre (SWEDINT). His professional background combines operational command with instructional and international exposure, making him well-suited to lead NDA’s multi-dimensional training environment.
As Commandant, Vice Admiral Jaggi will oversee the rigorous tri-service training of cadets who will go on to serve as commissioned officers in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Ministry of Defence noted that his leadership is expected to further strengthen the Academy’s long-standing legacy of discipline, jointmanship, and excellence in officer training.
With this appointment, Vice Admiral Anil Jaggi becomes the latest in a long line of distinguished military leaders entrusted with shaping the future of India’s armed forces through one of the country’s most respected defence training institutions.
