In a major boost to India’s defence modernization efforts, the United States has approved a $93 million weapons package that includes Javelin anti-tank missile systems and Excalibur precision-guided artillery projectiles. The announcement marks another significant step in the growing strategic and military cooperation between New Delhi and Washington.
The approved package consists of 100 FGM-148 Javelin missiles, a test missile, 25 lightweight command launch units, and multiple training and support components. Alongside this, India will also receive over 200 Excalibur artillery rounds designed for high-accuracy strikes, making them especially valuable in complex battlefield environments.
Officials said the sale is intended to enhance India’s ability to respond to current and emerging threats, strengthen homeland defence, and improve deterrence across the region. The move also aligns with the United States’ long-term vision of supporting India as a key security partner in the Indo-Pacific.
American defence contractors associated with the deal will provide technical support, logistics assistance, and integration services to enable seamless deployment of the new systems within the Indian Army. The Javelin system, known for its “fire-and-forget” capability, is considered one of the most effective portable anti-tank weapons globally. Meanwhile, the Excalibur guided artillery round offers exceptional accuracy and reduced collateral damage, significantly enhancing long-range strike capability.
Defence analysts see the approval as part of a broader effort to deepen interoperability between the two nations’ armed forces. The sale highlights a shared focus on maintaining stability and countering evolving challenges along India’s borders and across the Indo-Pacific strategic landscape.
