In an open discussion at the Raisina Dialogue on Friday, March 3, Chief of Defense Staff General Anil Chauhan said that the Ukraine conflict has taught India that it needs to be self-reliant. He said that India’s military can’t depend on other countries to give it weapons. The topic of the panel discussion was “The Old, the New, and the Unusual: Assessing Modern Conflicts.”
The Raisina Dialogue was put on by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) from March 2 to 4. “Provocation, Uncertainty, Turbulence: “Lighthouse in the Tempest”” is the theme of the conference. There will be people from 100 countries there.
About the panel discussion
During the panel discussion, the Chief of Defense Staff said that the conflict in Ukraine can be seen from many different points of view, especially from an economic and diplomatic point of view. He said that, as an Army Officer and Chief of Defence Staff, he looks at this war from a military point of view. He said that India is trying to figure out what it can learn from this to help it deal with a similar situation in the future.
The Chief of Defense Staff said that wars in the 21st century will be quick and short. But we are seeing wars that last a long time. The CDS said that India is taking a lot of steps to become self-sufficient in the defence field. To win wars today, you need to use weapons and strategies that are up-to-date.
He also said that the armed forces can do anything the government wants if the three services work hard to be self-sufficient. The General also said that India hasn’t done much in the last two or three years. He also said that today’s wars are short and quick, so they need precise weapons with long-range attack capabilities. On the other hand, he said, long wars need traditional weapons, like lots of artillery and tank ammunition.
The CDS also said that, from the point of view of the combatants, the focus should be more on kinetic operations and that, in the modern world, war is not only won by being smart. He also talked about stories and said that they make you feel like the country has won. But he said that as soldiers, the focus should be on things that move.
