Ukraine Attacks Russia-controlled Donetsk, Hitting Military Bases

On New Year’s Eve, Ukraine’s forces shelled the city of Makiivka and other places in the Donetsk region that are controlled by Moscow, Russian officials said. There were reports that a military quarters was hit, killing many people.

The government in Donetsk, Ukraine, that was put in place by Moscow said on Sunday that at least 25 rockets were fired at the area on New Year’s Eve night.

Moscow-based officials in Makiivka told the Russian state news agency TASS that at least 15 people were hurt in a series of shellings with High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) rockets. Makiivka is a major coal-producing centre.

Reuters was not able to check the reports on its own.

When asked for a comment, the Russian Defense Ministry did not respond right away. On Sunday, it said in its daily report that it had destroyed seven HIMARS rockets, including one near Makiivka.

Daniil Bezsonov, a high-ranking Russian-backed official in the parts of the Donetsk region that are controlled by Moscow, said that there was an attack on a vocational school that, based on what we know so far, housed military personnel.

Bezsonov said that the attack took place two minutes after midnight on New Year’s Day.

“The American MLRS HIMARS dealt a huge blow to the vocational school. There were dead and hurt people, but no one knows how many “Bezsonov wrote this on the Telegram app. “There was a lot of damage to the building itself.”
