The Indian Navy has requested that at least 75 new indigenous technology or products be created and integrated into the Navy in the upcoming year as part of an ambitious indigenization initiative.
The Indian Navy announced on Monday that “A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Defence Innovation Organization (DIO) and the Naval Innovation and Indigenization Organization (NIIO) to work on a collaborative project named SPRINT (Supporting Pole-Vaulting in Research & Development) through Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) and Technology Development Accreditation.” This is planned to be a part of the “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” to celebrate
The problem statements for Indian industries as part of iDEX (SPRINT) will be revealed by the Indian Navy in collaboration with DIO during the NIIO Seminar “Swavlamban 2022,” which is set for July 18–19 in New Delhi.
The Seminar’s goal is to include Indian academia and industry in efforts to achieve “Self-reliance in the Defense Sector.”
The formation of “Innovation and Indigenisation Organisations (IIOs)” inside the Army, Air Force, and Navy Headquarters is envisioned by the Defence Acquisition Policy (DAP 2020). As a result, the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri established the “Naval Innovation & Indigenisation Organization” (NIIO) on August 13th, 20.
The Vice Chief of Naval Staff is in charge of the three-tiered NIIO. The Naval Technology Acceleration Council (NTAC) was established at the highest level to integrate the complementary concepts of innovation and indigenization and to speed up the introduction of disruptive combat technology into the Navy in order to improve warfighting capabilities.
Every six months, NTAC convenes and issues apex-level instructions. It is made up of ex-officio members as well as individuals who have been nominated and have demonstrated technical proficiency and status, both inside the Indian Navy and among civilians, scientists, and businesspeople.
The Naval Innovation & Indigenisation Organisation Working Group (NIIO WG) was established to facilitate smooth interactions between the Navy and the MoD as envisioned in the DAP. It meets every two months. The NIIO WG also serves as the NTAC’s Working level Committee. The Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Staff Requirements) and Assistant Chief of Material (Modernization), who are the main sponsors of combat capability development, co-chair meetings of the Working Group.
Within the NIIO, a dedicated organisation called the TDAC has been established that focuses on innovation. Its responsibilities include engaging with academics and business, as well as directing internal innovations by naval personnel.
