Russia and India are broadly aligned on the need to pursue peace in Ukraine through dialogue and negotiations, Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov has said. His remarks highlight New Delhi’s continuing diplomatic engagement with Moscow as international efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict remain underway.
According to Alipov, Russia remains open to negotiations and believes Ukraine should take the next step towards restarting the peace process. He said Moscow has already outlined proposals for a possible settlement and continues to support a diplomatic solution.
The comments came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek. The leaders discussed the Ukraine conflict along with several other international and bilateral issues.
India has consistently maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are the most effective ways to address the conflict. Modi has repeatedly stressed the humanitarian consequences of the war and called for efforts that can bring the fighting to an end.
Alipov also pointed to growing security concerns in the Black Sea, claiming that attacks in the region have increased and have affected Indian sailors. The situation has broader implications for maritime security and the safety of commercial shipping operating through the region.
New Delhi has sought to maintain communication with both Moscow and Kyiv while preserving its strategic relationship with Russia. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s recent engagement with Ukrainian leadership also reflects India’s approach of keeping diplomatic channels open with all sides.
The Ukraine conflict remains a major issue in India-Russia discussions, but bilateral ties extend well beyond the war. Defence cooperation, energy, trade and space remain important areas of the relationship, with further high-level engagement expected between the two countries.
Russia’s latest assessment of India’s position indicates that Moscow continues to attach importance to New Delhi’s diplomatic voice. However, a lasting peace agreement will ultimately depend on negotiations between Russia and Ukraine and the willingness of both sides to resolve their major differences.
