Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant diplomatic visit to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan later this month, reflecting India’s growing strategic focus on Central Asia. The two-nation tour will include participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, followed by an official bilateral visit to Tashkent aimed at expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.
The first leg of the visit will see Prime Minister Modi attend the SCO Summit in Kyrgyzstan, where leaders from member nations are expected to deliberate on regional security, counter-terrorism, economic integration, connectivity, and emerging geopolitical developments. The summit is also likely to provide opportunities for bilateral discussions with several participating leaders on the sidelines.
India and Kyrgyzstan have steadily enhanced their strategic relationship over the years through defence cooperation, military training exchanges, and joint counter-terrorism initiatives. The annual Khanjar special forces exercise has become an important pillar of defence collaboration, while educational and technical partnerships continue to deepen institutional ties between the two countries.
Following the SCO Summit, the Prime Minister will travel to Uzbekistan for bilateral engagements with the country’s leadership. Discussions are expected to focus on boosting cooperation in trade, investment, defence, connectivity, critical minerals, energy, digital technologies, and regional infrastructure development. Officials from both sides are preparing for the visit, which is expected to provide fresh momentum to the India-Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership.
Central Asia has emerged as an increasingly important region in India’s foreign policy due to its strategic location, energy resources, and role in regional stability. Through stronger engagement with countries such as Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, India aims to expand economic partnerships, improve connectivity, strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation, and promote a stable and rules-based regional order.
The upcoming visit is expected to reaffirm India’s long-term commitment to Central Asia while strengthening both bilateral partnerships and multilateral cooperation under the SCO framework. Analysts believe the tour will further elevate India’s diplomatic presence in the region and open new avenues for strategic and economic collaboration.
