PM Modi Meets Ukrainian President; Supports ‘Peaceful’ Conflict Resolution

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has engaged in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and has reaffirmed India’s dedication to the prompt resolution of the conflict in Ukraine and the restoration of peace and stability in the region.

Modi, who is currently in New York for the final leg of his three-day visit to the United States, encountered Zelenskyy on the outskirts of the United Nations’ historic Summit of the Future on Monday.

This was the third meeting between the two leaders in approximately three months. They most recently encountered each other in Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine, on August 23, during the prime minister’s visit to the country. Modi had discussions with Zelenskyy in Italy’s Apulia during the G7 summit in June. He tweeted, “Met President @ZelenskyyUa in New York.”

We are dedicated to the implementation of the results of my recent visit to Ukraine in order to fortify bilateral relations. In a post on X, Modi reiterated India’s support for the restoration of peace and stability in Ukraine and the early resolution of the conflict.

According to the press release, Modi reiterated “India’s clear, consistent, and constructive approach in favour of a peaceful resolution of the conflict through diplomacy and dialogue, as well as engagement between all stakeholders.”

The prime minister also expressed that India is committed to offering “all support within its capacity to facilitate a lasting and peaceful resolution of the conflict.”

“We are collaborating to fortify our relationships and enhance our collaboration in a variety of sectors.” The primary objective of our discussion was to improve our engagement on international platforms, with a particular emphasis on the United Nations and the Group of 20. Additionally, we discussed the implementation of the Peace Formula and the preparation for the second Peace Summit. Zelenskyy stated on X, “We engaged in a thorough conversation regarding the opportunities that are currently available.”

“I am grateful for the clear support of our sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said the president.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated during a special briefing here that Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the prime minister for his efforts in resolving the conflict in Ukraine and appreciated India’s attention to the matter.

The Prime Minister’s Office stated in a post on X that the Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s dedication to fostering a peaceful resolution to the conflict, emphasising the significance of dialogue and diplomacy as the path forward.

Misri stated that the meeting “provided an opportunity to reassess the recent developments.” He also mentioned that both parties appreciated the positive momentum on a variety of issues in the bilateral relationship and agreed to maintain a close relationship.

Misri also stated that the Ukrainian side requested the meeting in response to a question.

Modi’s visit to Ukraine last month was the first time an Indian prime minister had visited the country since it gained independence over thirty years ago.

Modi previously addressed the UN’s historic Summit of the Future, which was conducted in the midst of ongoing global conflicts, such as the Ukraine crisis and the Israel-Hamas war.

He arrived in New York on Saturday after participating in the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, where he also engaged in bilateral discussions with US President Joe Biden.
