PM Modi conferred Indonesia’s highest honour; defence MoUs signed

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with the President of Indonesia during a high-level visit, where he was conferred the Bhayangkara Medal, one of Indonesia’s highest honours awarded to foreign leaders. The visit also witnessed the exchange of several key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), reinforcing the growing strategic partnership between the two countries.

The honour reflects the steady expansion of India-Indonesia relations, particularly in the fields of defence, maritime security, and regional cooperation. As an important Indo-Pacific partner, Indonesia occupies a central place in India’s strategic outreach to Southeast Asia and its broader vision for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

Over the years, defence cooperation between India and Indonesia has strengthened through regular naval engagements, coordinated maritime activities, joint military exercises, and enhanced security cooperation. Indonesia’s location along critical international sea routes further enhances its value as a key maritime partner for India in safeguarding regional stability and secure sea lanes.

The agreements signed during the visit are expected to expand collaboration in sectors that align with the strategic priorities of both nations, including defence, maritime security, economic cooperation, and technology. The growing partnership also complements India’s broader efforts to deepen engagement with ASEAN countries and promote regional connectivity and security.

Beyond defence, India and Indonesia continue to broaden cooperation across trade, investment, culture, education, and people-to-people exchanges. Under India’s Act East Policy, both countries have worked to strengthen institutional partnerships while advancing initiatives related to maritime domain awareness, capacity building, and technological collaboration.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit highlights New Delhi’s continued focus on strengthening ties with leading Southeast Asian nations. Indonesia’s strategic position near the Malacca and Sunda Straits-among the world’s busiest maritime corridors-makes it an indispensable partner for India’s maritime interests and the security of the wider Indian Ocean Region.

The conferment of the Bhayangkara Medal further reflects the growing trust and mutual respect between New Delhi and Jakarta. It also underscores the shared commitment of both nations to enhancing regional stability, expanding strategic cooperation, and advancing a rules-based order across the Indo-Pacific.
