Officials say that security and patrols have been stepped up at the border and other sensitive areas in Jammu after a terrorist attack killed five soldiers on Thursday.
Top officers of the Border Security Force (BSF) met with the army and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) over the past two days, people who asked not to be named said.
On Saturday, Sujay Thaosen, the head of the BSF, went to the forward defense sites in Poonch and met with field officers at the border to talk about how things are going. Thaosen, who is also the director general of the CRPF, met with CRPF leaders in Rajouri and Poonch for another meeting. They talked about security plans for the area.
Even though the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is in charge of the investigation, CRPF and local police and the army are checking security in different parts of the two districts.
Because Jammu is so close to the Pakistan border, the two paramilitary troops have a large presence there. While the BSF protects the borders, many companies of the CRPF are stationed in Jammu to keep law and order, which includes protecting the highway between Jammu and Srinagar.
The border and sector offices for both forces are in Jammu. Each is led by an inspector general.
“After the attack on Thursday, the director general was in Jammu for two days. The general deployment of the BSF along the borders and the domination plan in the forward defense locations were looked at. There was a separate meeting with the CRPF commanders in Rajouri and Poonch and the Army, according to a BSF official who spoke on the condition of anonymity but knew about the facts.
Officials said that the chief told CRPF staff on the highway to stay alert and increase security in crucial areas.
Terrorists attacked an army truck in Bhatta Durrian in the Mendhar tehsil of the Poonch district on Thursday. They used the heavy rain and low vision to sneak up on the truck. The five troops who were killed were from the army’s Rashtriya Rifles unit. They were in the area to fight terrorism.
A man who was hurt was taken right away to the army hospital in Rajouri. A spokesman for the army said Thursday that the terrorists probably used grenades to set fire to the army truck.
After starting the investigation on Friday, NIA officials who knew about the details said that 5-7 terrorists hid in a dense forest and carefully chose the spot to attack the military truck in a well-planned ambush. Three of them were likely foreign terrorists who came from Pakistan.
