Lt Gen Virendra Vats Appointed as New Director General of NCC

Decorated Army Veteran to Lead India’s Largest Uniformed Youth Force

Lieutenant General Virendra Vats, AVSM, SM, VSM has officially taken charge as the new Director General of the National Cadet Corps (NCC), marking a fresh phase in the leadership of India’s largest uniformed youth organisation.

Before assuming his new role, Lt Gen Vats served as the Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, where he played a crucial role in strengthening tri-service coordination. Commissioned into the Gorkha Rifles in 1988, he has completed an illustrious career spanning over 35 years, decorated with major honours including the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal.

Widely respected for his operational expertise and leadership acumen, he has commanded troops in challenging terrains and held prestigious instructional and strategic appointments. His experience in defence planning, youth outreach and national-level coordination is expected to significantly boost NCC’s expansion roadmap.

With over 14 lakh cadets enrolled across schools and colleges, the NCC has been a cornerstone of character-building, discipline and leadership training for India’s young citizens. Under the leadership of Lt Gen Vats, the force is likely to witness enhanced collaboration with government initiatives such as skill development, disaster response and social campaigns.

His appointment signals a continued push towards youth empowerment through structured military-style training and patriotic engagement.
