The Indian Army will launch its online entrance examination for the Agnipath Scheme from June 1 2026, marking the next phase of recruitment under the armed forces’ transformative short-service model.
The posts include General Duty, Technical, Clerk or Storekeeper Technical, Tradesman, Soldier Pharma, Soldier Technical Nursing Assistant, and Women Military Police.
The Agnipath Scheme, introduced in 2022, represents a fundamental shift in how the Indian Army recruits and manages its personnel. Rather than traditional permanent commissions, the scheme enrolls soldiers as Agniveers for a four-year tenure, with a select cohort retained for permanent service on completion of their initial contract.
The June 1 examination will be the online gateway for candidates seeking to join as Agniveers across various categories. The Army has standardised this selection process through a common digital entrance test, replacing the earlier regional recruitment rallies, to ensure transparency and scale across the country’s vast recruitment area.
Since its launch two years ago, the Agnipath model has been central to the Indian military’s modernisation strategy. The scheme brings workforce flexibility, reduces long-term pension liabilities, and creates a younger, more operationally agile force structure. For soldiers, it offers four years of structured military training, a monthly service stipend, and a gratuity package, along with skill certification for civilian employment post-service.
The scheme has already produced its first cohort of Agniveers who have completed initial training at regimental centres across India. These soldiers have been deployed in operational areas and garrison duties, and their performance has informed refinements to training protocols and induction procedures.
The online entrance examination format allows the Army to manage applications and assessments at scale. Candidates qualifying the written test will proceed through physical fitness tests and medical examinations before final selection and enrollment.
For aspirants, the June 1 start date provides clarity on the recruitment calendar. Interested candidates are advised to monitor official Army recruitment websites and recruiting zones in their respective regions for detailed notification, including eligibility criteria, syllabus, application windows, and test centres.
The Agnipath Scheme has drawn attention both domestically and internationally as a case study in military human resource restructuring. Defence analysts view it as aligned with India’s broader force modernisation objectives under the National Security Strategy, which prioritises technological advancement and operational readiness over legacy personnel structures.
