India and the United States have stepped up discussions on military cooperation and the evolving security environment in the Indo-Pacific following the completion of Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2026.
Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth met Lieutenant General Joel B Vowell, Deputy Commanding General of the United States Army Pacific (USARPAC), in New Delhi on September 28. The two senior military leaders exchanged views on developments in the Indo-Pacific and examined opportunities to strengthen defence engagement between the Indian and US armies.
According to the Indian Army, improving interoperability through joint training and military exercises was an important part of the discussions. The engagement came as the two countries concluded the latest edition of Yudh Abhyas, their long-running bilateral Army exercise designed to provide troops from both sides with experience in coordinated operations and joint training.
The 22nd edition of Yudh Abhyas 2026 was conducted at Auli in Uttarakhand and the Mahajan Field Firing Range in Rajasthan. Around 600 personnel from each country participated in the exercise, which incorporated training suited to different operational environments. Activities included high-altitude operations, precision fires, counter-drone measures and integrated command-and-control training.
The exercise also gave Indian and US troops an opportunity to work with different equipment and develop a better understanding of each other’s procedures and tactical approaches. Training across mountainous and desert environments added different operational dimensions to the bilateral exercise.
The conclusion of Yudh Abhyas was followed by the high-level meeting between General Seth and Lieutenant General Vowell, providing an opportunity for the two military establishments to discuss the next stages of their engagement. The US Army has described Yudh Abhyas as an important platform for strengthening combined interoperability and military cooperation between the two countries.
The latest military-level engagement also coincided with a separate meeting between Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and a bipartisan US Congressional delegation led by Representative Brian Mast, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Their discussions focused on the broader India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, including defence industrial and technological cooperation.
The parallel engagements underline that India-US defence relations extend beyond military exercises to areas such as technology, defence production and industrial cooperation. For the armed forces, meanwhile, regular exercises and senior-level interactions continue to provide avenues for improving coordination and operational familiarity.
The Indo-Pacific remains an important area of security engagement for India and the United States. As both sides continue their military dialogue, the focus on interoperability and joint training is expected to remain an important element of their defence relationship.
The meeting between General Dhiraj Seth and Lieutenant General Joel B Vowell therefore comes at a significant point in the bilateral military calendar, immediately after Yudh Abhyas 2026 and alongside broader discussions on defence cooperation. The engagement reflects the continuing effort by both countries to maintain regular military dialogue and expand practical cooperation between their armed forces.
