India-Thailand Military Exercise Maitree 2025 Commences in Meghalaya

Joint training focuses on counter-terrorism and jungle warfare to enhance defence partnership

The India-Thailand joint military exercise Maitree 2025 has begun in Meghalaya, bringing together troops from both nations to strengthen operational coordination and tactical cooperation.

This year’s edition is designed to simulate counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in dense jungle terrain, an area of expertise crucial for both armies. Soldiers are undergoing rigorous field training, including room interventions, ambush drills, and coordinated search operations, aimed at boosting interoperability.

According to defence officials, Maitree is not just a tactical drill but also a strategic initiative to reinforce trust and cooperation between the Indian Army and the Royal Thai Army. The exercise also highlights the commitment of both nations to jointly address regional security challenges, particularly in the Indo-Pacific.

The annual Maitree exercise has become an important pillar of India-Thailand defence engagement, complementing their wider diplomatic and cultural relations. This ongoing training in Meghalaya is expected to enhance the ability of both armies to operate together in real combat situations while deepening their long-standing military partnership.
