In a landmark step for India’s defence industry, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has inaugurated the country’s first overseas defence manufacturing plant in Berrechid, Morocco. The facility, set up by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), will focus on producing the WhAP 8×8 wheeled armoured combat vehicle, developed in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Expanding India’s Defence Footprint
The Moroccan plant represents India’s debut in international defence manufacturing. It is also the first India-owned defence facility in Africa, reflecting New Delhi’s ambition to strengthen security and industrial ties across the continent.
The WhAP 8×8 is designed for modern battlefield conditions, offering high mobility, amphibious capabilities, and modular configuration. By setting up production in Morocco, Tata aims to deliver vehicles not only for the Moroccan Armed Forces but also for potential African customers in the future.
Strategic Importance for Both Nations
For India, the factory is an extension of its Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, moving beyond domestic self-reliance towards becoming a global defence supplier. For Morocco, the facility provides new opportunities in local employment, skill development, and access to advanced defence platforms.
The initiative is also symbolic. This is the first ever visit by an Indian Defence Minister to Morocco, underlining the importance New Delhi attaches to defence diplomacy with Africa. During the visit, both countries are expected to sign agreements on training, industrial collaboration, and technology exchange.
A Platform for Future Cooperation
The plant is expected to produce around 100 units annually once it reaches full capacity, creating hundreds of local jobs. Over time, India and Morocco may expand cooperation to other areas such as maritime security, joint training, and advanced research.
Experts believe the venture could set a precedent for similar projects in other African nations, helping India position itself as a credible and competitive defence partner in the region.
