India is currently examining Bangladesh’s request seeking the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with New Delhi maintaining that the matter will be dealt with through established procedures. The development has brought the issue back into focus as India and Bangladesh continue to manage a sensitive phase in their bilateral relationship.
Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India since leaving Bangladesh in August 2024 following widespread political unrest that resulted in the end of her government. Since then, authorities in Bangladesh have pursued legal proceedings against her and have sought her return to the country.
The Indian government has not indicated that a decision has been taken on the extradition request. Until the examination is completed, there is no confirmed indication that India will accept Bangladesh’s request.
