India Approves Serial Production of Indigenous ABHYAS High-Speed Aerial Target

DRDO and L&T collaborate to enhance domestic defence training capabilities under “Make in India”

India has officially approved the serial production of the ABHYAS high-speed expendable aerial target, a major milestone for the country’s defence preparedness and domestic manufacturing capabilities. Developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), ABHYAS is designed to simulate high-speed aerial threats for realistic training of the armed forces.

The system has successfully completed multiple trials, demonstrating precision, reliability, and effectiveness in replicating aerial targets for surface-to-air and air-to-air defence exercises. The production contract has been awarded to Larsen & Toubro (L&T), reflecting a growing collaboration between India’s defence research organizations and private industry.

ABHYAS plays a critical role in modernizing training protocols. By providing realistic aerial threat simulations, it allows the Indian Armed Forces to prepare for advanced combat scenarios without relying on imported target systems. This move aligns with the government’s “Make in India” initiative, aimed at fostering self-reliance and strengthening domestic defence manufacturing.

Beyond training, ABHYAS has the potential for further technological evolution. Future upgrades may include advanced decoy capabilities, enhanced sensor integration, and export-ready variants, which could position India as a competitive player in the global defence market.

The mass production of ABHYAS marks a significant step in India’s journey toward modern, self-sufficient defence infrastructure, offering both strategic advantages and opportunities for private-sector growth in the defence sector.
