India and the United States are stepping up strategic engagement in the Indian Ocean region, with both sides discussing ways to expand practical cooperation in maritime security, strategic infrastructure and regional connectivity. The discussions took place during a telephone conversation between Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and US Under Secretary of State Allison M. Hooker. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the officials discussed advancing the India-US Indian Ocean Strategic Venture (IOSV) and explored areas where the two countries could achieve greater practical cooperation and complementarity across the region.
The IOSV was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump following their talks in Washington in February 2025. The bilateral framework is intended to strengthen cooperation across the Indian Ocean, with its broader areas of focus including maritime security, strategic infrastructure, connectivity, investment and commerce.
A key element of the latest engagement is the emphasis on maritime security.
