Hamas Spokesperson Abu Obaida Killed in Israeli Airstrike on Gaza

Israel hails strike as a major blow to Hamas propaganda network

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant announced on Saturday that Abu Obaida, the prominent spokesperson of Hamas’ military wing, was killed in an airstrike targeting central Gaza.

The strike, carried out by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), hit a residential block in Gaza City’s Rimal area where Obaida was reportedly hiding. Israeli officials described the operation as a “strategic success,” noting that the long-serving spokesperson played a critical role in shaping Hamas’ narrative during conflicts.

Abu Obaida, often seen masked and wearing a red keffiyeh in televised statements, had been the voice of the Al-Qassam Brigades for nearly two decades. His speeches were central to Hamas’ psychological warfare, frequently broadcast across Arab media outlets.

Local reports from Gaza indicated that multiple civilians, including women and children, were also killed in the same strike, raising further alarm over the mounting humanitarian crisis. Casualty figures are still being verified as rescue operations continue amid heavy bombardments.

While Israeli leaders hailed the strike as a symbolic turning point, analysts suggest Hamas is likely to appoint a successor quickly to prevent disruption in its communication network. The group has not yet released an official statement confirming or denying the death.

The killing comes as Israel intensifies its ground and air campaign in Gaza, where civilian casualties continue to rise and international pressure mounts for a ceasefire.
