New Delhi, September 1, 2025 – Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to deliver the first two Tejas Mark-1A fighter aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF) by the end of this month, Defence Secretary R.K. Singh announced. The induction marks a major milestone in India’s indigenous defence manufacturing efforts and is expected to open the door for a significantly larger order.
The Tejas Mark-1A is an advanced version of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), featuring upgraded avionics, electronic warfare capabilities, and modern weapon integration. Designed to strengthen India’s aerial combat capabilities, the aircraft will gradually phase out the aging MiG-21 fleet while bolstering operational readiness.
Following the delivery and operational clearance of the initial two jets, the Ministry of Defence is likely to approve a follow-on order for 97 additional Mark-1A fighters, a project estimated at ₹62,000-67,000 crore. This will be in addition to the earlier deal for 83 aircraft signed in 2021 at a cost of ₹48,000 crore.
At present, around 38 Tejas aircraft are in service, with production lines running at full capacity to meet the IAF’s requirements. HAL’s schedule had been delayed due to supply chain disruptions, particularly in the delivery of GE F404 engines, but engine supply has now stabilized.
Defence experts say the Mark-1A will serve as a “workhorse” for the IAF and help India progress towards greater self-reliance under the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat programs. However, with squadron strength still below sanctioned levels, the Air Force may need to pursue additional aircraft acquisitions in the coming years.
