On Friday, the Ministry of Defense signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a state-owned business, for the purchase of two Dornier aircraft for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and an engineering support package for a total cost of Rs 458.87 crore.
An official statement said that the planes will be bought under the Buy (Indian) Category.
The Dornier planes are made in India by HAL’s Transport Aircraft Division in Kanpur.
“It will help a lot in achieving Aatmanirbharta in defense, which is in line with the government’s “Make in India” initiative,” he said.
The plane will have high-tech features like a Glass Cockpit, Maritime Patrol Radar, Electro Optic Infra-Red device, and Mission Management System.
“The addition (of the aircraft) will strengthen the ICG’s ability to keep an eye on its maritime areas of responsibility from the air,” a press release said.
By 2024-25, the government wants to make and sell defense products worth Rs 175,000 crore, which includes Rs 35,000 crore worth of defense exports.
In the past few years, India has taken a number of policy steps and made changes to make it easier for Indians to design, build, and make defense equipment. This has helped India become more self-sufficient in this area.
