In a significant development for India’s defence aviation sector, GMR Aero Technic (GAT) has entered into a partnership with Boeing Defence India for the maintenance of the Indian Navy’s P-8I maritime surveillance aircraft. The agreement focuses on carrying out comprehensive heavy maintenance services at GMR’s MRO facility in Hyderabad.
The partnership will enable GMR Aero Technic to perform advanced maintenance checks, structural inspections, aircraft upgrades, and technical support activities for the Navy’s long-range reconnaissance aircraft. The move is expected to strengthen India’s self-reliance in defence aircraft maintenance while reducing dependence on overseas MRO facilities.
The Boeing P-8I is among the Indian Navy’s most critical maritime patrol platforms, designed for anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, surveillance missions, and maritime strike operations. The aircraft plays a key role in monitoring the Indian Ocean Region and enhancing India’s maritime security capabilities.
Officials associated with the project stated that the collaboration reflects the growing trust between global aerospace companies and India’s private defence industry. The Hyderabad-based MRO facility is equipped with modern infrastructure capable of supporting complex military aircraft servicing requirements.
The agreement is also expected to support the government’s “Make in India” and defence indigenisation initiatives by expanding local aerospace maintenance expertise. Industry observers believe the partnership could open opportunities for additional defence aviation programs in the future.
With the Indian Navy continuing to modernise its surveillance and reconnaissance fleet, reliable maintenance and operational readiness of the P-8I aircraft remain strategically important. The new partnership between Boeing Defence India and GMR Aero Technic is expected to contribute significantly toward maintaining high mission availability for the fleet.
