Poland Asks German Approval For Ukraine’s Purchase Of Obsolete Fighter Jets

A spokesman for Germany’s defense ministry in Berlin said Thursday that Poland has asked the German government for permission to send old German MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine.

These planes would help Ukraine defend itself against Russian troops from the air.

Boris Pistorius, the German minister of defense, has said that a decision on the jets will be made soon. The Polish Defense Ministry in Warsaw did not say anything right away.

When Germany reunified in early 1990, the East German GDR gave Germany 24 MiG-29 fighter jets. At the time, people thought these planes were some of the most advanced attack jets in the world.

Over time, 22 of the planes were given to Poland by Germany in 2004. One of the two jets that were left crashed, and the other is on show at a museum.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, fighter jets have been one of the most important pieces of war weapons that Ukraine needs. However, at first, the focus was on getting advanced Western tanks.

Since Germany decided to send Leopard 2 tanks and the US sent Abrams to Ukraine, there have been more calls for Western fighter jets.
