The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has granted an extension to General Anil Chauhan, allowing him to continue as India’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) until 30th May 2026, or until further notice. This move underscores the government’s emphasis on stable and consistent leadership at the helm of the armed forces.
Since assuming the role of CDS in September 2022, General Chauhan has been instrumental in enhancing operational coordination among the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. He also continues to serve as Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, further strengthening strategic defence management in the country.
General Chauhan’s distinguished career includes numerous accolades such as the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal, reflecting his long-standing contributions to India’s national security.
This extension is seen as a strategic decision to maintain continuity in leadership while navigating emerging security challenges and modernisation efforts within the armed forces.
