Defense Forces Have 1.55 Lakh Open Positions, Most In Army: Govt

On Monday, the Rajya Sabha was told that the three armed forces are short about 1.55 lakh people, with 1.36 lakh of those jobs going unfilled in the Army.

Ajay Bhatt, Minister of State for Defence, said in a written answer that the lack of people in the armed forces and ways to make up for it are looked at regularly. He also said that many steps have been taken to fill the vacancies and encourage young people to join the Services.

Bhatt said that the Indian Army, which includes the Army Medical Corps and the Army Dental Corps, needs 8,129 more officers. The Military Nursing Service (MNS) has 509 open positions, and JCOs and other ranks have 1,27,673 open positions. The minister said that there are also 252 open civilian jobs in Group A, 2,549 open civilian jobs in Group B, and 35,368 open civilian jobs in Group C.

There are 12,428 people the Navy doesn’t have enough of. In his answer, the minister said that there is a lack of 1,653 officers, 29 medical and dental officers, and 10,746 sailors.

Group A is short 165 employees, Group B is short 4,207 employees, and Group C is short 6,156 employees. There are not enough people in the Indian Air Force by 7,031. He also said that the Air Force is short 721 officers, 16 medical officers, 4,734 Airmen, and 113 Airmen with the Medical Assistant trade.

There are too few civilians in Group A, Group B, and Group C. Group A is short 22, Group B is short 1303, and Group C is short 5531. “The Armed Forces look at the lack of people in the military and what can be done to make up for it on a regular basis. Many steps have been taken to fill the open positions and encourage young people to join the Services “Bhatt said.

The minister said that these include putting more focus on improving the image and publicity in audio, visual, print, internet, and social media, holding career fairs, exhibitions, motivational lectures in schools and colleges, computer-based online application filling examinations, and updating the websites of Services to make it easier to implement a strong recruitment management system.

Bhatt said that other steps were taken to get more young people to join the services. These included making the recruitment process easier for candidates, giving both men and women with Short Service Commissions a Permanent Commission, letting women join through the NDA, and building the right infrastructure.
