Rajnath Singh, India’s minister of defense, said that in recent years, India has become one of the world’s top exporters of weapons. On Tuesday, he gave the Field Marshal SHFJ Manekshaw memorial lecture at the Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (SIMS) in Khadki. He talked about the “Role of Youth in Nation Building.”
“By 2026, India’s defense exports will reach Rs35,000–40,000 crore, which is the most ever. It went from being worth Rs900 billion in 2014 to being worth Rs16,000 billion in 2021-22,” he said.
“India could do this if it had the right ecosystem and pushed Indian defense manufacturers,” he said in response to a student’s question about India’s ability to be self-sufficient in the defense sector.
Singh said that the government’s policies helped young people, which led to India having more than 90,000 startups, of which 100 were unicorns. “We cut down on paperwork to help young business owners. According to a Morgan Stanley report, India is on track to be one of the top three economies by 2027,” Singh said, adding that India’s opinions now have weight on global platforms.
