Bangladesh has formally requested India to ensure that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina does not deliver political speeches while residing on Indian territory, highlighting the matter during a high-level diplomatic engagement between officials of the two neighbouring countries.
The issue was discussed during a meeting in Dhaka between India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, and Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir. The discussions primarily focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, regional developments, and maintaining constructive engagement between New Delhi and Dhaka.
During the meeting, Bangladesh conveyed its concern over reports that Sheikh Hasina may address political gatherings from India. Dhaka stated that such activities could have implications for its domestic political environment and requested India’s cooperation in preventing the use of its territory for political messaging directed at Bangladesh.
Along with raising the issue, both sides reaffirmed the importance of maintaining stable and mutually beneficial relations. The officials reviewed ongoing cooperation across multiple sectors and emphasized continued dialogue to address matters of shared interest through diplomatic channels.
The development comes as India and Bangladesh continue to engage on a wide range of strategic, economic, and regional issues. While no official response has been issued by the Indian government regarding Bangladesh’s request, the matter is expected to remain part of ongoing diplomatic consultations between the two countries.
