Officials said Thursday that what they think was an improvised explosive device (IED) blew up in a border village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, creating a huge hole in the ground.
After the explosion on Wednesday night, security forces have been put on high alert near the borders and along the Jammu-Pathankot highway.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Kathua, Shivdeep Singh Jamwal, told PTI that a search of the area on Thursday morning turned up a live grenade.
“At 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, news came in about a powerful explosion. We started looking for them this morning… The bomb squad took the samples and sent them to be tested “said the SSP.
The SSP, who was in charge of the search in the area and the border areas next to it this morning, said it was a very powerful explosion.
“Around 6:30 this morning, a live grenade was found. It shows that the grenade was thrown after someone saw that security forces were nearby “, he said.
The SSP said that it looked like an IED went off.
Since the explosion happened near a police post, it is possible that the police post was the target. “It points in that direction. We were in this area more on Wednesday, which is why they may have thrown a grenade and then set off an IED blast “, Jamwal said.
Ram Lal Kaliya, who lives in Saniyal village, which is only 300 meters from the border post, is the head of the Block Development Committee (BDC) “We heard a loud noise around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday. I told the person in charge of the post.”
He said that it took one and a half hours to find the blast site, which was a big hole in a farm field.
