The Indian Army says that “unprovoked firing” took place Thursday morning near the village of Haraothel in Manipur by people with guns. The Indian Army’s Spears Corps said in a statement that the security forces’ response to the shooting was “calibrated to prevent any collateral damage.” Even though the forces were able to stop the shooting, “unconfirmed reports indicate some casualties,” according to an Army statement.

The Army said that the shooting started around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday. In answer, Army troops were quickly called up, and more troops were sent to the area to get things back under control. The Army said there were reports of big crowds gathering in the area and that the situation was being closely watched.
CLASHES IN MANIPUR
So far, more than 100 people have died in fights between the Meitei and Kuki groups in Manipur because of their different cultures. On May 3, a “Tribal Solidarity March” was held in the state’s hill districts to protest the Meitei’s claim for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. This led to the first fights.
Meiteis make up about 53% of the people who live in Manipur. Most of them live in the Imphal Valley. The Nagas and Kukis, who are tribal people, make up another 40% of the population and live in the hill areas.
